Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, excited about the promise of the company, and anticipate observing their progress".
The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed emails showed that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the technology organization stated it accepted his choice to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the Board," the organization commented.
Congressional Action
This news follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on this week to pass a bill that would compel the US justice department to make public its files on Epstein.
The measure will then move to the administration of the White House for signature. The President has stated he plans to sign the measure, after reversing his position on the issue following objections from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of Epstein-related correspondence released by the legislative panel days ago mentioned multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The communications showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to introduce the academic to influential international personalities.
Personal Response
After the emails were released with the general audience, Summers expressed he assumed "full responsibility for my misguided choice to persist in communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to reestablish trust and mend connections with the persons most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor served in senior posts under party leaders; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments earlier on this week, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was not associated with the organization.
The former official entered the board of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its top executive the company leader.
