Italy's Consumer Group Slams Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Completely Unjustified

A leading Italian consumer association are raising alarms over what they describe as completely unjustified cost hikes for lift tickets this cold-weather period, cautioning that skiing could become an exclusive privilege for the wealthy.

Significant Cost Rises Throughout the Country

From the majestic Alps and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the ski runs of central Italy, prices are poised to increase by as much as 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to fresh research.

The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now cost skiers €86 per day this season. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a single-day lift ticket is expected to reach €60, following significant overcrowding during the previous winter.

Seasonal Pass Costs and Additional Expenses

At the same time, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to upwards of €1,800 in the Aosta valley.

The expense of hiring ski equipment has also increased, along with lodging costs and dining expenses throughout mountain resorts.

Watchdog Leader Cites Unjustified Increases

Gabriele Melluso, leading the watchdog organization, emphasized that the price increases—which operators blame on higher energy costs, facility upkeep, and requests for superior gear—were completely unjustified and unacceptable.

"Both because inflation in Italy are under control and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for ski resort operators in 2022, have returned to normal," Melluso noted.

He added that prices have now reached levels where less wealthy individuals are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, completely.

Visitor Decrease and Broader Context

Melluso observed a significant drop in alpine visitors during the 2024-2025 season, with 1 million fewer Italians hitting the slopes compared to the previous year due to rising costs.

Despite these increases, Italy remains a more affordable destination for skiing enthusiasts in the European region compared to neighboring Switzerland, France, and Austrian locations.

Olympic Context

The growing concern over winter sports expenses comes as the nation gets ready to host the 2026 Winter Games between February 6 and 22. The nation's top diplomat, the foreign affairs official, announced on Friday that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "worldwide ceasefire" during the global competition.

"With Milan Cortina we must also send a peaceful communication and dialogue... to stop warfare during the Games," Tajani emphasized.
