Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim First Wins After Player Arrests
Miami recorded eighty-six first-half scores against the Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a overwhelming 146 to 114 win over the Grizzlies in their initial basketball match since guard Terry Rozier was detained over alleged unlawful sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was additionally detained as part of a sweeping FBI investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.
However, the Miami team were focused as they put up eighty-six opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and afterwards said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces this."
Portland also secured their initial match after the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 win against the Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests
Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
Silver further said an NBA investigation into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into the matter and were open about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they announced recently was an indictment.
"And 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
