The most severe possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a searing 4C increase in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot surge in sea level. An alternative projection envisions a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact agriculture and energy needs.
Credible Extremes, Not Guarantees
These consequences, certain ones are linked to critical climate thresholds, are seen as improbable but plausible. The team said that these models addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The severe weather events we have mapped are not forecasts, but they are credible," commented Nigel Arnell who directed the study. "Britain has been planning in the absence of the frameworks to plan for catastrophic outcomes. We've now provided policymakers what they need to get ready for environmental results they wish to avoid, but must not overlook."
A Suite of Extreme Weather Possibilities
Another collection of worst-case scenarios sets out the possible scale of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These suggest that temperatures could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C above the norm, while precipitation could be triple standard measurements.
The probability of the catastrophic events occurring could not be calculated due to unknown factors about what steps will be implemented to address global warming and how the Earth's systems will behave. This approach was described as similar to defence planning or resilience checks for economic stability.
Critical Possibility Highlights
- Four-Degree Warming: Planetary heating exceeding 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action collapses or if powerful amplifying effects such as the tropical forests dying release its huge repository of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heat domes and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A key circulation system, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and losing stability due to global heating. A collapse beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would face immense difficulties and water supplies would be fundamentally reshaped," explained the professor.

Official experts has said that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the risks for four degrees. Past policy documents have been criticised as being "inadequate" by some observers.
