Stupidity and Monarchical Hubris Damaged Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet
This episode commenced with a solitary photograph, arguably the most significant ever taken of a royal family member.
In the frame appeared the Duke of York, standing closely beside a young woman, while another individual smiled knowingly in the background.
Without that photograph, shot at a gathering in 2001, who would have believed the assertions of a teenager who declared she was moved across the ocean and compelled to have cursory intimate contact with a individual of the royal bloodline?
A curious, revealing move by someone who had openly stated to have no been aware of her, asserted he could no have had sex with her, and yet provided a large amount of family resources to avert a long-delayed legal case.
Years of Scandal
Considering this, conversations of the monarchy acting swiftly to distance themselves from Andrew are inaccurate. This affair has endured for the largest portion of 15 years since that photograph, and a further photo of Andrew strolling amiably with a disgraced financier surfaced.
- Self-importance: For what duration did his brothers and sisters, possibly even his relatives, understand that Andrew was so arrogant?
- Questionable Associations: They must have understood, if his employees and the police were performing their duties, that he had some deeply disreputable associates given he publicly invited them to royal residences.
- Financial Extravagance: If the monarchy did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his wastefulness with state resources.
Trips were listed in royal annual reports: private aircraft travel from the estate to a country club and back again in time for lunch, exclusive air travel instead of regular transport, all for the convenience of "the travel enthusiast".
Existence of Entitlement
Furthermore the arrogance which expected respect when he walked into a area or the extreme awareness about his designations used on his correspondence in messages to his associates.
He managed to escape consequences while his parent, who unaccountably spoiled him, was still surviving. The Queen did at least revoke him of official roles and honorary colonelcies in the consequence of his ill-fated and, it is now clear, untruthful public statement six years ago.
Recent Developments
Merely in the last fortnight that events accelerated, following the publication of books giving more troubling details of his actions and that of his companions.
More information have again revealed Andrew's assumption that he could escape lying about his contact with a notorious figure.
People (and the journalists) were far in advance of the monarchy. There was not a single person of any consequence to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of arrogance.
Institutional Fears
The more astute family members recognized that. The one imperative is to transfer the monarchy, if not as heretofore at least whole and unstained.
They have spent the last 190 years trying to reverse the reputation of past sovereigns, demonstrating they are useful, responsible and responsive to their subjects.
He was placing all that in danger in an time when deference and secrecy is no longer adequate.
Consequences
Eventually, the famously indecisive sovereign was pushed more. There was no other option. The royal household had surrendered command of the story.
Presently the loss of honorifics and the continued and permanent social disgrace that will pain Andrew most deeply.
- Demotion: Demoted to just a commoner
- Historical Precedent: The first member to forfeit his titles in recent history
- Armed Forces: Especially stinging given his duty in the conflict
He remains a constitutional officer, on paper able to act for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the crown, but not any of these will truly happen.
What Lies Ahead
Do individuals he meets still defer to him? Might they still forget themselves and call him Prince? Will they even say Mr,
Of course, he is not retiring to an ordinary town, but to the monarchy's extensive property at a monarchical property.
At that location, he will be supplied by the king with one of the estate properties and given some type of personal stipend.
This is not his previous residence, where he paid a minimal rent for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit remote, but even so it may not be adequate distance.
Unresolved Issues
Matters remain unresolved. There are still files in the custody of overseas authorities to be disclosed.
- Parliamentary Interest: Will lawmakers seek further action
- Monetary Probe: Or examine the waste of taxpayer funds
- Criminal Investigation: There may even be a police investigation into his actions
Possibly for the time being the harm to the monarchy to the crown is restricted. The message from the royal household was evidently that the removal of titles was what the monarch, and notably other senior royals, wanted.
Altered Approach
The cessation of illusion that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, notably, the short communication showed plainly that the monarchy were siding with the accuser's narrative of occurrences.
Furthermore, for the first time they finally showed regard for the affected individuals: "The measures are judged required, notwithstanding the truth that he persists in refuting the allegations against him."
Finally it is entitlement, selfishness and indolence that will destroy the institution. In his stupidity, self-gratification and corruption, Andrew appears never to have learned that lesson.
