The Duke of York gives up his title as the Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
He has been under growing pressure over his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

He is relinquishing his titles, among them the the Duke, he has declared in a personal statement.

He has been under increasing scrutiny over his associations with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, with demands for the Palace to take action against him.

That now seems to have caused the figure deciding to voluntarily give up his honors and to relinquish participation of the Order of the Garter.

In his statement he said he continued to "strongly dispute the allegations against me".

"In consultation with the monarch, and my close and wider family, we have agreed the persistent claims about me divert from the responsibilities of the King and the Royal Family," said a statement from him.

"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my obligation to my relatives and nation first.

"I support my decision five years ago to step back from royal engagements.

"With His Majesty's consent, we believe I must now go a further step. I will therefore no longer employ my title or the distinctions which have been granted to me. As I have said before, I firmly dispute the claims against me."

He has encountered a number of scandals, including a court case he resolved with an accuser, doubts about his money matters and his association with an accused intelligence operative.

He will remain a prince - but will discontinue to be the Duke of York, a designation received from his the late Queen, the late Queen Elizabeth.

He had already ended to be a "participating figure" and had forfeited the use of his royal style and no longer appeared at official royal events. His status now will be even more lessened.

His former spouse will be known as Ferguson and no longer Duchess of York, but their children will carry on to have the honor of princess.

Prince Andrew has faced strong scrutiny over his links with convicted sex offender Epstein, more in recent times including inquiries about when he had truly ended ties.

In his BBC Newsnight interview, the royal had said that he had cut off all ties with the financier after they had been pictured together in NYC in the end of 2010.

But emails sent in the following year later emerged suggesting that the prince had confidentially stayed in communication with Epstein, such as exchanging a message: "Keep in close touch and we'll have further interactions soon!"

There had been growing annoyance in the royal household at the controversies that continued to envelop the prince.

Soon a late publication by Virginia Giuffre will be published which is likely to draw additional attention on the royal's connection with Virginia Giuffre and the financier.
