Walmart Introduces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon TCG Products
As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during a single visit. This new rule officially takes effect as of early November, based on an internal announcement distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee seen in the video faced widespread backlash for permitting the large-scale transaction to proceed.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. Yet, the wording has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. What exactly qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Additionally, because the restriction is tied to individual trips, in theory a determined scalper could return repeatedly—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate large quantities over several hours.
The Scalping Phenomenon
For the average collector, such efforts might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, speculators have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the game's rising popularity.
Certain buyers seek to sell unopened products at a markup, while others hunt for valuable pulls that can command sky-high values. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.

The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and likely scalper target.
